An OntarioMD – University of Toronto Collaboration to Support Community-Based Practices while Fostering Interest in Family Medicine among Early Learners

Presenter Bios:

Michal Leckie

Michal Lecki

Michal Leckie is a third-year medical student at the University of Toronto, with a strong interest in family medicine. She completed a Masters of Science in Global Health in 2022 at McMaster University, and completed her undergraduate degree in Physiology and Global Health at the University of Toronto in 2020. While in medical school, she has participated in the CLLEO family medicine program, volunteered as a mentor with the Advocacy Mentorship Initiative, led the Wilderness Medicine student group, and worked with the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment.

Fatima Bah

Fatima Bah

Fatima Bah is a third-year medical student at the University of Toronto. She completed her undergraduate studies in Life Sciences at Ontario Tech University (UOIT). While at UOIT, she conducted research in the Aquatic Omics Lab, focusing on proteomics and genomics, which led to a publication in “Frontiers.” In addition to her academic pursuits, Fatima is interested in women’s health and co-founded the non-profit organization Wellness of Women, which aims to empower women and support local shelters. She is also passionate about learner wellness, and equity and diversity initiatives. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys travelling and engaging in outdoor activities such as camping and hiking.

Ryan Banach, MD

Dr. Banach is the Early Career Supports Lead in the Office of Health System Partnerships at the DFCM. He has been practicing comprehensive office-based family medicine in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood of Toronto for 12 years—an experience that has given him insight into the inequality of care patients receive across different neighbourhoods in Toronto. He is an adjunct clinical lecturer at DFCM who has taught both medical students and residents. Dr. Banach is passionate about practice management and frequently delivers presentations to physicians to help them understand better the business side of medicine. He also presents seminars on billing, office efficiency, and career management to Ontario family physicians.
