How AI-Assisted research ethics workflows reduce administrative burden and address burnout in community practice

Turning a clinical idea into a quality improvement or research project often requires navigating complex research ethics processes that can consume 20–40 hours of clinician time. For busy community providers, this administrative burden can delay—or prevent—important innovation and contribute to burnout.
In this session, discover how AI-assisted tools can streamline the research ethics workflow, from REB determination and literature reviews to protocol generation and consent documentation. Through a real-world case study, participants will learn how clinicians can reduce administrative effort, accelerate ethics submissions, and focus more time on patient care and practice improvement.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify key administrative barriers in the research ethics process and distinguish between projects that require REB review and those exempt under TCPS2 guidelines.
- Describe how AI-assisted tools can automate literature reviews, protocol development, and REB determination to significantly reduce research administration time.
- Apply a structured, technology-enabled workflow to translate clinical questions into ethics-ready submissions within their own practice.

Presenter Bios:
Matthew Bromwich, MD
Dr. Matthew Bromwich is a Pediatric ENT Surgeon, Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Ottawa, experienced and exited founder, TEDTalker, and Director of Core Innovation at CHEO-RI which collaborates on innovation impacting more than 2 million Canadians across 8 hospitals with a commercialization purchasing power of more than 2 billion.
Dr. Bromwich is the inventor of several medical devices (DizzyFIX, ClearScope, SHOEBOX, MODICA) and holds 5 other medical patents. He aims to democratize access to medical care by delivering innovative and inexpensive solutions.
In particular, he is the founder of SHOEBOX audiometry which at it’s peak employed 110 people and is a globally available hearing testing platform that has reached more than 5 million people.
Dr. Bromwich has published and co-published more than 50 papers and five book chapters on Otolaryngology and has held more than 18 million dollars of grant, research and investment funds.
In 2014 he won the national “TELUS Award for mHealth Innovation”. In 2016 he was nominated for the E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year award and he and his team won the 2016 Interface Health Challenge for their work on mobile hearing testing and won the David E Mitchel prize at the 2018 Manning Innovation Awards.
He is currently launching a national MedTech Venture Studio focused on medical devices and digital health.
