A clinicians guide to leveraging the AI galaxy while avoiding the legal abyss: tips from the Commissioner, the physician scientist and the lawyer

Ariane Siegel

Ariane has been recognized internationally for her achievements in privacy and security. She was recently awarded the 2023 Women in IT Award for Canada’s Security Leader of the Year. She has also been recognized by Who’s Who as a global leader in technology law, privacy and data protection. Ariane provides OntarioMD with strategic and legal advice. Her current focus is on technology and legal issues with respect to use of Artificial Intelligence in Primary Care. Through her leadership, OntarioMD provides health system partners with a practical perspective on privacy and security from the lens of community-based physician practices. Ariane developed OntarioMD’s Privacy & Security Training Module for the Ontario health-care sector and a second Module focused on virtual care.

Prior to joining OntarioMD, Ariane supported global corporations with technology law advice as a Partner in Canada’s largest law firm and from her own practice. She worked as a Senior Investigator for the federal Privacy Commissioner, Law Clerk to the Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice and as Constitutional Counsel to the Attorney General of Ontario. Ariane was part of the launch team for Richard Branson’s Virgin Mobile Canada

Amol Verma, MD

Amol Verma is a physician-scientist in General Internal Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital, Temerty Professor of AI Research and Education in Medicine at the University of Toronto, and Provincial Clinical Lead for Quality Improvement in General Medicine at Ontario Health. He co-founded and co-leads GEMINI, Canada’s largest hospital clinical data research network, partnering with ~40 hospitals across Ontario and serving > 60% of the province’s population. He also co-leads VITAL, a federally and provincially funded initiative building a pan-Canadian platform for innovation using hospital data. Dr. Verma has published >140 peer-reviewed papers and secured over $300 million in research funding. He completed medical training at the University of Toronto, earned a master’s degree at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, completed research fellowships through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Canadian Frailty Network, and AMS Healthcare, and serves on numerous federal and provincial advisory bodies, including as Chair of the Researcher Council of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada (DRAC) and a Board Member of DRAC and AMS Healthcare.

Will Falk

Will Falk has spent over 25 years as a strategist and advisor in New York and Toronto, advising top academic centres, governments, and innovative companies in healthcare. Currently he is an Executive-in-Residence at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, a Senior Fellow at the CD Howe Institute and a Policy Fellow at the CSA Public Policy Group.

Mr. Falk is interested in the impacts of technological change on health systems and their governance and payment mechanisms. He works with several innovative enterprises on digital health and software development including as an Innovation Fellow at Women’s College Hospital Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care. He has been a Board Director or Advisor for more than a dozen enterprises including local and national charities, startups, health systems and publicly listed companies. Will received his B.Sc. from the University of Toronto (Trinity College) and an M.P.P.M. from Yale University’s School of Management where he was later a Visiting Research Fellow.
