Accurate medical billing is essential to a physician’s practice, yet many clinicians face challenges navigating complex billing rules, documentation requirements and evolving fee schedules. Traditional billing education methods, such as reference guides, training sessions and delayed feedback, are often disconnected from clinical workflows and difficult to access at the point of care.
Dr. Yousuf explores the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as an educational tool to support physician billing literacy. Participants will learn about the development and pilot implementation of a chatbot designed to help internal medicine clinicians navigate billing scenarios through interactive, case-based learning. The tool enables users to ask questions about assessment codes, premiums, common billing considerations and documentation requirements, receiving immediate feedback based on Ontario billing guidance.
Dr. Yousuf will share lessons learned from the design, implementation and early evaluation of the tool, including opportunities and limitations associated with AI-enabled physician education. Participants will gain practical insights into how conversational AI may support billing accuracy, reduce administrative burden and enhance the physician experience when used alongside existing clinical and administrative systems.

I’m an internist, hospital medicine leader, and medical educator passionate about building programs that scale impact across healthcare systems. Building & Scaling Programs As the founder of the Acute Medicine Hospitalist Program at Juravinski Hospital, I led the recruitment of over 85 physicians to transform care for 200 inpatients. This model improved patient flow, reduced length of stay, and expanded service capacity. I also helped launch a virtual post-discharge clinic and integrated internal medicine with oncology and surgical services, enhancing continuity and quality. Medical Education I created McMaster’s Hospitalist Fellowship, expanding it from 2 to 6 fellows and establishing a competency-based curriculum. I co-lead the UGME Professional Competencies Program, training future physicians in leadership, advocacy, communication, and collaboration. Healthcare Innovation My work integrates AI, digital tools, and EMR optimization to improve clinical decision-making and transitions of care. I’m currently piloting AI-powered models for risk stratification and readmission reduction—bridging innovation with frontline care. Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Indigenous Reconciliation (EDI-IR) As Associate Chair of EDI-IR for McMaster’s Department of Medicine, I lead the development of our strategic vision and initiatives. My work centers on equity-driven faculty recruitment, inclusive governance, and Indigenous community engagement.
