
Lessons Learned: Building a Smarter Digital Clinic
This session will review the clinic-changing impact of integrating digital tools and workflows, from end to end, with a focus on a first-of-its-kind initiative, undertaken by the CHEO-funded Kids Come First Health Team in Ottawa and supported by OMD. Attendees will learn about the challenges, pivoted approaches, and unique solutions that enhanced patient care access, reduced no-show rates, facilitated inter-provider communication, and improved workflow efficiency, with insights that can be applied in any clinic.

Presenter Bios:

Kelley Zwicker, MD
Dr. Zwicker has been a Pediatrician for 10 years. She is also a parent of 4 young children. She strives to provide patient-centered compassionate care, no matter what the reason. She also understands the worries and challenges of parenting, and firmly believes in the potential of working as a team in order to help children and families thrive and live to their full potential. Dr. Zwicker is currently the Chief of the Division of Community Pediatrics, in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Ottawa. She provides newborn care in the community at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. She also maintains her skills by working at CHEO in the Emergency Department. Dr. Zwicker’s clinical interests include general Pediatric issues, as well as a special focus in vascular anomalies/vascular birthmarks. Dr. Zwicker completed her undergraduate degree at Dalhousie University. She then moved to western Canada where she received her Medical Degree at the University of Calgary. She completed her Pediatric residency training at the University of British Columbia, followed by a clinical fellowship in Vascular Anomalies, at Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Zwicker is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Zwicker has a passion for bringing people together, most recently through founding the Ottawa Community Pediatricians Network. She is committed to learning something new every day, and to providing compassionate and patient care for your child/youth.

Sean Kerklan
Sean Kerklaan is an Automation & Technology Specialist at Smart Clinic Systems, driving digital enhancements for better pediatric care. Expert in digital health, Sean has streamlined clinic operations through EMR and scheduling system integrations. He also manages physician billings and staff payments with cloud tools, ensuring financial efficiency for both EOK and KCF sites. Collaborating with OntarioMD, Sean optimizes digital health tools for effective community-based healthcare management.

Katie Peter
Katie Peter is a Practice Enhancement Consultant at OntarioMD, focusing on optimizing EMR systems and workflows to improve patient care. With 20 years as an Educational Worker, and EMR Coordinator, she excels in standardizing documentation and developing practice metrics. Katie also creates educational plans to enhance student outcomes and coaches practices using the Model for Improvement. Outside of work, she enjoys boating, hiking, skiing, and is an enthusiastic animal lover.
